George W. Bush and Hillary Rodham Clinton recently made statements that could lead to direct consequences with regards to online gambling legislation.
President Bush stated in his State of the Union address: "The people's trust in their government is undermined by congressional earmarks—special interest projects that are often snuck in at the last minute, without discussion or debate... So this time, if you send me an appropriations bill that does not cut the number and cost of earmarks in half, I'll send it back to you with my veto", stated Bush.
Now, Bill Frist managed to pass the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act by attaching it to the totally unrelated Security and Accountability For Every Port Act of 2006. Frist knew that if he respected the democratic process, he would lose. This led him to avoid any possible debate and discussion by waiting until midnight on the last evening before Congress met for the 06 elections.
Hillary Rodham Clinton recently spoke on Fox news on how she would control spiraling oil prices. Clinton stated, "9 of the 13 biggest oil-producing countries that are in OPEC are also members of the WTO. I would file complaints."
The statement's implication to Internet gambling is that the US ignored the WTO when the global body ruled that the US was unfairly targeting overseas websites by passing the anti-gaming rights act, while allowing US firms that offer off-track horse racing betting to continue with business as usual.
