Gus Hansen, whose real name is Gustav Hansen, is one of the successful poker players of this generation. He isn't based in the U.S. right now, unlike most of his colleagues are. He was born on February 13, 1974 in Denmark. Currently, he resides in Monaco, a nation where fun, leisure, and entertainment are at its best.
Prior to being 'The Great Dane', Gus Hansen was a young tennis champion and a world-class backgammon player. During his teens, he loves sports and similar physical activities. He was such a promising athlete during those times.
However, when Gus Hansen has had a taste of the American lifestyle, things have changed a lot. When he was in New York, he earns his money through professional backgammon tournaments. He was a true-blue gambler. He always makes and takes private bets of any sort, be it in sports, personal abilities, and of course, poker.
In 1993, Gus was an exchange student in The University of California. That's when he started to play poker and eventually evolved to be the great player he is now. As a poker player, Gus loves to bluff and raise his two cards. And that's how he get his opponents calling or even raising his bets even if what he's got is a good, legitimate hand.
Gus Hansen is currently enjoying the reputation of being the only player that has won the World Poker Tour open tournaments thrice. He is also the star of the very first WPT Bad Boys of Poker, which is strictly an invitation event. He is now part of the World Poker Tour Walk of Fame. He was inaugurated to it along with other poker greats, James Garner and Doyle Brunson.
To date, Gus Hansen is believed to have total winnings of more than $5 million. He, along with other business partners, has successfully launched the PokerChamps.com, which opened in 2003, although they have sold it to Betfair in 2005.
