Johnny Chan, one of the more famous poker players of Las Vegas, originally hailed from Guangzhou, China. Born in 1957, he is now living permanently in the entertainment capital of the world. However, Johnny Chan didn't leave China just to pursue his poker career. His family initially settled in Phoenix in 1968, when Johnny was still young. His family owns a chain of restaurants in the city. And as a boy, Johnny was expected to continue on handling the family's restaurant business.
However, thing had changed a lot for Johnny when he joined a junket headed to Las Vegas when he was 16 years old. When he turned 21, he decided to drop out of the University of Houston, where he was studying hotel and restaurant management. He wanted to become a professional poker player and so he headed back, settled, and stayed in Las Vegas.
Since 1985, Johnny Chan was amassing lucrative income as a poker player. He won the World Series of Poker tournament for two straight years, which is from 1987 to 1988. In a span of 10 years, from 1985 to 2005, he has held ten World Series of Poker bracelets. He is only behind one man, Phil Hellmuth in this feat, with owning him 11 bracelets. In 2002, Chan was officially inducted to the Poker Hall of Fame. Since the time Johnny Chan had started playing poker, his total income had amounted to $3,744,331.
Even if Chan had left his family's restaurant business long ago, he did not forget to invest on a fast food franchise, a career that was initially close to his heart. He owns the food chain in Stratosphere Hotel. He also works as a consultant for Las Vegas casinos and similar game makers.
Throughout his career, Chan had also released two best-selling poker books. One is a collaboration with Mark Karowe and it is entitled 'Play Poker Like Johnny Chan'. His next book is actually a follow up, 'Million Dollar Hold'em: Winning Big in Limit Cash Games'. He also has launched a poker room recently.
