Known as 'The Tiger Woods of Poker', Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, California in 1976. Ivey was introduced to poker when his family moved to Roselle, New Jersey by his grandfather. Ivey's grandfather would deal from the bottom of deck and try to teach an 8 year old boy Five-Card stud. Things didn’t work out very well initially. But at 16 years of age, Ivey started playing backroom games for money. He ended up spending so much of time there that other players in the casino nicknamed him 'No Home Jerome'. Eventually Ivey started losing heavily and this made things at home difficult for him. There were times when the rent was delayed, hot water shut off and the electricity cut.
But shortly thereafter, things turned like a feel-good story. He went on to marry Luciaetta, a woman he met at his telemarketing job. Ivey still continued to play poker. At age 21, his name became known to the casino floor staff and he was on his way to success.
In 2000, at the age of 24 he ventured in deep waters where poker was concerned and has never looked back. In $2000 No-Limit Texas Hold'em, he came in fifth. And later, when he won the bracelet, Phil Ivey, the legend was born.
In 2002, he won three more WSOP bracelets in 3 different games, joining Hellmuth and Ted Forrest for the record of most wins in a single year. He went on to take his fifth bracelet in a pot-limit Omaha event in 2005 and took the tally to a record stand of 11. In 2006, he almost raised the total up to seven, coming in second in an Omaha Hi-Lo event and third in the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E event, raking in cash for over $800,000.
As of 2007, Ivey has managed to take in more than $7,80,000 in live tournament winnings.
