Born October 28th of 1962 in Vietnam, Thuan Scotty Nguyen didn't have a very good journey out of his native country into the United States. He was 14 when he fled Vietnam to get to Thailand, only to be chased by the Communist police while traveling seas along with 16 others aboard the same boat. But despite that bad experience, he and his family eventually made it to Orange County, the same place where he started to learn poker. Scotty Nguyen never liked it in school and that's the reason why he had spent more time on poker tables than inside the classroom.
His bad habit had done him good though, because he was able to haul a job as a poker dealer at a casino in Southern California. His experience as a poker dealer became his official lessons in professional poker. He observed how both the losers and the winners play the game. Scotty Nguyen committed each lesson he learned on the tables in his mind up until he had decided to play the game as professional. He went on to compete at poker tournaments and had won enough to make a name for himself.
Scotty Nguyen got his first World Series of Poker bracelet in 1997, when he won the $2,000 Omaha Hi/Low event. But his most notable win happened a year after that, in the 1998 WSOP championship against Kevin McBride. That game gave him an astounding cash prize of $1,000,000. His other bracelets came from the 2001 Pot Limit Omaha, 2001 Omaha Hi/Low event, and more recently, the 2008 HORSE championship.
Scotty Nguyen was not your traditional poker-faced poker player. In fact, he plays with so much charm, emotion, and charisma, which makes losing against him almost a pleasure. He loves playing it loose but aggressive, light but firm. He is also known for adding "baby" in his sentences when he talks to his opponents on the poker table.
To date, Scotty Nguyen has five bracelets and 36 money finishes under WSOP. Under the World of Poker Tour, he has one title, seven official final tables, and 12 money finishes. Scotty Nguyen is one of the many poker players who had won most tournaments and the most money in poker history.
