Basic rules of the Texas Hold'em poker game

Texas Holdem is played in four betting rounds known as the pre flop, flop, turn and the river. It consists of making the best possible 5 card hand from 2 pocket (private) cards and 5 community cards. The position of dealer passes to each player in a clockwise position, and the position is marked with the dealer button. The players to the left of the dealer pay the small blind and the big blind; these are initial bets placed into the pot before the cards are dealt, and guarantee betting action.

Each player is dealt two pocket cards, and the initial round then begins with the player to the left of the big blind. The betting round (pre flop) moves in a clockwise direction, and is completed when each player has either matched the bets on the table or folded. After the pre flop round, the first three community cards are dealt face up (the flop) and another betting round is begun; from this moment all betting rounds begin with the player that paid the small blind.

After the second betting round is completed, the fourth community card, 'The turn' card is dealt face up. A third betting round is completed, with the bet amount doubled. The 'river' community card is then dealt face up before the final betting round is completed. Once all betting rounds are complete, the showdown commences with all remaining players showing their best possible hand. If only one player remains, they can choose to muck (not show) their hand. The winner takes the pot.
